Step 1 · The job
What it actually involves.
Gas work, unvented hot water, water fittings, and how we quote.
Only a business registered with the gas safety register may work on gas fittings and appliances, and doing it without registration is a criminal offence rather than a paperwork failing. Our registration number is on the legal page, and the right thing for you to do is check it on the public register rather than take our word or a card at the door. Anybody who objects to being checked has told you something.
What it actually involves.
Whether we are registered for it.
On the public register.
Or a referral elsewhere.
What is there, and its size.
Whether it is covered.
Identified before the work.
Correct, and left working.
An unvented cylinder above the prescribed size needs a competence entirely separate from gas registration, and its installation is notifiable building work. The reason is physical rather than bureaucratic: an unvented system stores energy, and if the safety devices are missing, wrong or neglected it can fail violently. A gas registration says nothing about this, and anyone who implies it does is either confused or hoping you are.
Water fittings have to comply with their own regulations, certain installations must be notified to the water undertaker before the work rather than after, and backflow prevention exists to protect the public supply rather than just your home. That last point is worth sitting with: a badly made connection can contaminate water well beyond the property. Contravening the requirements is an offence, which surprises people who think of plumbing as unregulated.
Whether it is notifiable.
Given before, not after.
Compliant, and suitable.
Backflow properly prevented.
What is actually there.
Agreed before starting.
Within what was agreed.
Certificates handed over.
A price or its basis before work starts, and nothing beyond a quote without your agreement first. Where something found affects safety, you get it in writing rather than mentioned at the van. Where a job touches a regime we are not covered for, it is referred rather than attempted, which occasionally costs us the work and is the only defensible answer. No promise about how long an existing system has left.
Ask what it touches. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
